Data Matters with Excel®

Activity 5.1

Your task for this project is to find the mean and median of at least two of the number-line observations in the data on the representative U.S. sample, then note whether those variables are skewed, and if they are, which way they are skewed.

Open RepUSSample.xls.

To get the mean, select a blank cell to the right of the data, click on the function button at the top of the screen (it has “fx” on it). Click on Statistical on the left and Average on the right. Click OK. Select the column of the data you want the mean from by clicking on the letter in the gray cell at the top, then OK.

To get the median, repeat those steps selecting Median rather than Average.
