Data Matters with Fathom! Dynamic Statistics™ software

Activity 6.1

The task for this project is exploring the data in the dataset that was used for the examples in Section 6.1 of Data Matters.

These are the exploratory data analysis tools presented in Section 6.1.

  • Histogram
  • Mean
  • Median
  • Minimum
  • Maximum
  • Stem-and-leaf
  • Box plots

In previous projects, you have made histograms and found means and medians. Minimums can be found the same way as medians, by sorting and scrolling through to find them. Fathom is not set up to create stem-and-leaf plots.

Here is how to get a box plot.

Open the current population survey file you used for Section 6.1. in Data Matters.

Drag a new graph onto the workspace. Drag the attribute you want to examine onto Drop an attribute here. Select Dot Plot, Box Plot.

To see separate plots for each category of another attribute, select the other attribute and drag it onto the y-axis of the box plot.

If you would like to see paired histograms, select the plot type (in the upper-right corner of the graph), then Histogram.
