Data Matters with SPSS®
Activity 4.2
Here are the steps this project requires.
- Pick two of the categorical attributes in the representative U.S. sample and create a cross-tabulation.
- Find the marginal totals and proportions. Run a chi-square test to get a chi-square.
- Use your software to find the expected counts.
Heres how to do each step.
Step 1: Pick two of the categorical attributes in the representative U.S. sample and create a cross-tabulation.
Open RepUSSample.sav. Select Analyze, Descriptive Statistics, Crosstabs.
Select the variable you want for your row variable, then click on the black triangle next to the Row(s) box.
Select the variable you want for your column variable, then click on the black triangle next to the Column(s) box.
Step 2: Find the marginal totals and proportions. Run a chi-square test to get a chi-square.
Click on Statistics, select Chi-Square, and click on Continue.
Step 3: Use your software to find the expected counts.
Click on Cells, select Expected, Total, and click on Continue, OK.
In which cells do you find the big differences between expected and observed? Can you guess why those differences appear in the data?
