Activity-Based Statistics: Student Guide

An Essential Supplement When first published in 1996, Activity-Based Statistics set a new standard for the introductory statistics course, presenting an approach that is appealing and relevant to today’s students. Now, in its second edition, this acclaimed supplementary text offers even greater advantages, with updated examples and data, revised and new activities, improved Instructor Resources, and extended technology options.

Experiential Learning Activity-Based Statistics provides instructors with a comprehensive set of innovative activities designed to be easily integrated with any introductory statistics core text. The activities, which are organized around the major topics covered in most introductory courses, use hands-on data collection and simulation to develop basic concepts of statistics and then relate these concepts to real problems. By engaging in these activities, students experience statistics in context and discover its everyday relevance as they build upon concepts learned in their core text.

Updated and Improved In the second edition, you will discover:

  • Enhanced Instructor Resources, with ample embedded annotations specifically for the instructor’s use, including assessment tools, sample results based on real results from students, answers to problems, and suggestions for appropriate incorporation of technology in your course or a particular activity
  • New activities as well as updates to many of the originals, spanning AP Statistics and college introductory course curricula
  • An entirely new organization, with four sections relating directly to most modern college courses as well as to the AP Statistics curriculum and a final section focusing on long-term projects
  • Optional technology extensions to enhance student learning through the use of Fathom Dynamic Statistics™, other statistical software, or the graphing calculator
  • Instructor Data Sets CD-ROM, packaged with the Instructor Resources, and tied specifically to the activities that offer technology extensions

Activity-Based Statistics: Instructor Resources

The Instructor Resources guide enables instructors to move away from a lecture-and-listen approach toward an innovative activities approach that engages students in the learning process. Activities are organized around the major topics covered in most introductory courses. Each activity includes copies of the Student Guide pages and also provides teaching notes for the instructor. This allows the flexibility to use the activities as class demonstrations, group work in class, or take-home assignments. There are more activities than can be used in one course, which allows instructors to choose from each of the topics so students will be exposed to a range of concepts through hands-on learning.
