Calculus: Single Variable

Calculus: Multivariable

Brian E. Blank and Steven G. Krantz

College

Overview

Blank and Krantz’s Calculus brings together time-tested methods and innovative thinking to address the needs of today’s students, who come from a wide range of backgrounds and look ahead to a variety of futures. Some study the subject because it is required, others because it will widen their career options. Mathematics majors go into law, medicine, genome research, the technology sector, and many other professions. Blank and Krantz’s Calculus strives to empower these students, enhance their critical thinking skills, and equip them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the major or discipline they ultimately choose to study. Published in two volumes, Calculus: Single Variable and Calculus: Multivariable, this text fits well into most universities’ course sequences for calculus.

Pedagogy

  • Clear writing and extensive examples make this book accessible to all students. Blank and Krantz’s engaging style makes the language of mathematics understandable and enjoyable.
  • Graphical interpretations and numerical examples reinforce concepts and deepen students’ understanding.
  • Essential ideas are showcased with examples to create a seamless link between concepts and applications.

Content and Structure

  • Applications to chemistry, biology, medicine, public policy, finance, economics, and other social sciences augment classic applications in physics and engineering.
  • The two volumes, Calculus: Single Variable and Calculus: Multivariable, thoroughly cover all topics found in a three-semester sequence, particularly, transcendental functions, vector-valued functions, differential equations, sequences, integration, probability theory, Power series, Taylor polynomials and series, Stokes’s theorem, Green’s theorem, and the Divergence theorem.
  • Sprinkled throughout these easy-to-use books, several highlighted features break up the text and pique students’ interest. Highlighted “Insights” provide extra information and answer common questions. “A Look Back” boxes review material, and “A Look Forward” boxes preview material.
  • Adding context to the content, “Genesis & Development” explores the history of topics in the chapter and provides biographies of influential mathematicians. This feature brings each chapter to a close.

Technology

  • Technology complements and enhances traditional mathematical skills throughout Calculus as students use computer algebra systems (CAS) and graphing calculators.
  • Maple™ is used throughout as an exemplary CAS. End-of-section exercise sets can be solved with any CAS or graphing calculator.
  • Students explore calculus and sharpen their technology skills with computer modeling and numerical calculations included in the text and exercises.
