The Heart of Mathematics: An invitation to effective thinking, Second Edition
by Edward B. Burger and Michael Starbird
Your students will awaken to the meaning of mathematics
Transform your mathematics course into an engaging and mind-opening experience for even your most math-phobic students. The Heart of Mathematics: An invitation to effective thinking now in its second editionsucceeds beyond any other textbook aimed at non-math, non-science-oriented majors. Infused throughout with the authors’ humor and enthusiasm, The Heart of Mathematics introduces students to the most important and interesting ideas in mathematics while inspiring them to actively engage in mathematical thinking. The text’s review in the JuneJuly 2001 issue of the American Mathematical Monthly states:
“This is very possibly the best ‘mathematics for the non-mathematician’ book that I have seenand that includes popular (non-textbook) books that one would find in a general bookstore.”
The Heart of Mathematics is a book to be read and enjoyed by both faculty and students, as well as mathematicians and general interest readers. In the authors’ own words, “We selected a few of the greatest and most interesting ideas in mathematics and tried to make them accessible and intriguing to students. We hope instructors will find some of their favorite topics among those in The Heart of Mathematics, and that instructors will enjoy introducing those mathematical vistas to their students. Our goal is to offer students the genuine ideas and modes of thinking that attracted all of us to mathematics.”

From explorations into chaos theory and probability to questions about infinity and the fourth dimension, entertaining contexts capture students’ interest as they develop effective methods of thinking and problem solving. With the use of over 40 java applet explorations on the accompanying CD, manipulatives from the accompanying kit, 3-D glasses, and other visualization techniques, students become active investigators, modeling their thinking and, in the process, discovering the mathematics inherent in the world around them.
The Second EditionEven More Effective
Since its initial publication, The Heart of Mathematics has stimulated a lively exchange between users of the text and the authors. Responding to this feedback, Edward Burger and Michael Starbird have crafted a new edition that offers an even richer experience for both instructors and students. The second edition features:
- Important new content and useful applications. A new final chapterDeciding Wisely: Applications of Rigorous Thinkingpresents everyday, practical applications of the strategies of thought developed throughout the text to situations students encounter in their daily lives.
- Expanded coverage. With advice from statisticians, the authors have crafted three sections that cover the topics generally found in an introductory statistics course. Students who read these sections will be able to identify statistical displays, understand statistical terms, and recognize statistical fallacies.
- More support for students. “Developing Ideas”preparatory questions preceding “Mindscape” problemsprovide helpful checkpoint s for students to confirm their reading comprehension, concept clarity, and in some cases, algebraic agility.
Extensive instructor materials. An enhanced teaching package includes detailed lesson plans, suggested class activities, additional mathematical background material, Instructor Videos, and a Test Bank.

Instructors and reviewers are saying…
- “I’m having a wonderful time using your text. It’s everything I have been looking for in a book for this kind of course. I just completed teaching Math 105, Math for Liberal Arts Students, at Irvine Valley College, and I must tell you that in 25 years of teaching this course I’ve never had a better experience. I feel terrific because I know I delivered a quality course, full of rich and challenging ideas. I’ve taught Math 105 many times from traditional textbooks, and I’ve never been this excited before.”
Richard Zucker, Irvine Valley College
- “I love this book! Students are telling other teachers how much they like this book, and when I walk into class they are already talking mathematics! It is so wonderful! [Heart of Mathematics] is going great on our campus and all three of us using the book are having a blast!”
Jodi Cotten, Jamestown Community College (now Westchester Community College, Valhalla, NY)
- “Never before Burger and Starbird, had such a giant step forward been taken in turning college students on to math. The Heart of Mathematics is easily the best liberal arts math textbook ever written. The authors understand which math really is beautiful and interesting, and design their chapters accordingly. They are pioneers in writing engagingly about mathematics. Greek philosophers might consider this the ideal liberal arts math text. There is nothing left for other authors to do but to try to imitate Burger and Starbird.”
Dave Kennedy at Shippensburg University, PA
- I have been teaching mathematics at Salado High School for thirty-two years. This year I have an independent study class consisting of six of our brightest juniors and seniors. I bought a copy of The Heart of Mathematics this summer and fell in love with it. I have purchased a copy for each of the six students, and we discuss something from the book almost daily. I want to commend you for writing such an interesting and informative book.”
Dennis Cabaniss, Salado High School, Salado, TX
- “I’m teaching a course using the Heart of Mathematics…I love the book!”
Raymond Greenwell, Hofstra University
Accolades from the student community…
- I’m currently taking a math course to fulfill my GE requirements and we’re using your text, The Heart of Mathematics. I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful book it is. I’ve never been great at math, but the way topics are covered in the text makes things easier to understand. … I want to again express my gratitude to you and your text for helping me better understand math!
Neil Blaze, junior, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
- Williams College students…
“Best darn math book ever.”“While many books claim that their text “makes math fun again!” I believe that yours is the only one that actually accomplishes this.”
“It takes amazing concepts and makes them easier to understand.”
“I definitely plan on keeping the textbook so that I can look through it in the future and try some of the problems we didn't cover during the class--which is something I never thought I would say about any textbook, ever.”
“The book is awesome.”
- Brooklyn College students…
“This class was great. It allowed me to become creative and imaginative.”
“I gained a whole new perspective for looking at math.”
“This class gave me an experience that I will remember. It has shown me that there is more to math than just numbers.”
- and from James Madison University…
“I have never liked a math book before. It was great.”
“This math book is incredible; it teaches you math in the purest sense of the word. Also, it was funny and challenging.”
“This textbook is a pleasure to usegreat!”
