“Are you finally ready to give up lectures and actively engage your students in their own discovery of statistical ideas? If so, please take a hard look at this textbook.”

—Jonathon Cryer, University of Iowa, from review in the The American Statistician (TAS)

“I just have to tell you how enthusiastic I am about Workshop Statistics, Second Edition. . . . I’m finding the students understand the topics much better by using the activities in Workshop Statistics. We love it! I am thrilled to see how my students respond to WS. They are learning and they are having fun!”

—Kathleen Larson, Kingston Senior High School, Kingston, NY

“I have had great success this year with . . . Workshop Statistics. This is a great program for the Community College because it offers an alternative to traditional education in math and significantly reduces the high anxiety levels of the students. They come early (or at least never late!) for class; they stay late and are constantly keeping me on my toes. What a great learning environment!”

—Keith Adams, Northwestern Connecticut Community College, Winsted, CT

After several years of teaching Introductory Statistics in traditional lecture format and watching many students turn off halfway through the term, I came across Allan Rossman’s Workshop Statistics text and switched to it in 1997. The change in students’ attitudes toward the course was immediate and marked. Even those whose grades are not the highest remain engaged in the learning process throughout the term. The energy brought to class by the students and the enthusiasm with which they engage in the collaborative learning activities is a pleasure to behold. When a team of students realizes how thoroughly they are in control of their learning and how effective that learning can be, the team shifts into a kind of higher gear. They become active learners in the true sense. I have preached the benefits of Workshop Statistics to all who would listen over the last five years. I will never return to the "old” way of teaching Statistics.

—Bill Quinn, Frederick Community College, Frederick, MD

Workshop Statistics is a blue print for successful student engagement. The text helps prepare our students with lifelong learning skills that serve them well. . . . Students realize they can effectively integrate new knowledge under this guided format. They lose the stereotypical view of a mathematics classroom as they are up out of their seats performing simulations, gathering data, and sharing their results with other groups in the class. The Web site [Instructor Resources at www.keycollege.com/ws] has been particularly effective to spark ideas for assessment items. Rossman’s ideas of the roles of the student and instructor are key to using the text effectively. With Workshop Statistics, you will grow as a teacher.

—Alan Russell, Elon University, Elon, NC

“AP Statistics was designed to be a student-centered, authentic data driven, high conceptual, low computation course. By letting Workshop Statistics drive the syllabus, data and investigation always set the tone for the class. Starting each topic with WS, working through each Unit, is more likely to guarantee that the students construct more of their understanding first. It allows the teacher to trust students to constantly work together, collect and manipulate data, and draw conclusions.”

Albert Coons, Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, Cambridge, MA
